Today in Toronto, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, met with the Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, Janet L. Yellen, during the Secretary’s first official visit to Canada.

Today’s meeting follows the Deputy Prime Minister’s meeting with Secretary Yellen in Washington, D.C. earlier this month, and underscores the close relationship between Canada and the United States.

The Deputy Prime Minister and the Secretary discussed the impacts of global inflation on people in Canada and the United States, and the steps their respective governments are taking to make life more affordable for Canadians and Americans.

The Deputy Prime Minister and the Secretary also spoke about energy security; ensuring a reliable supply of critical minerals among democratic partners; and fighting climate change and the utility of border carbon adjustments, among other topics. They also discussed international tax fairness and reaffirmed their support for the implementation of the OECD/G20 Inclusive Framework’s two pillar plan for international tax reform.

Deputy Prime Minister Freeland and Secretary Yellen concluded by reinforcing their determination to continue supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s illegal invasion, and to ensure the maximum effectiveness of sanctions against Russia and Belarus.
